This is the Characters page, here you can get a look at the main characters. First you'll see a small chart that tells you the character's Element, followed by his or her ranking in the different stats, 1 is best and 7 is worst. The first paragraph is the bio from the game manual(if possible), the second paragraph is what I think about the character, pros/cons etc. Below the characters is a stat chart that will help you balence your parties, followed by all of the LoD party combos.

DART

Dart is the main character and you can not switch him out of the party so you'll have to get to know his Additions and such. Dart is the most average character in the game. He is the middle of everything in most base stats.

SHANA

Shana is later replaced for cirtain story reasons so you never get to really see her full potential, but Shana has the lowest base DEFENCE and the highest base MAGIC DEFENCE and MAGIC ATTACK.

LAVITZ

Lavitz like Shana gets replaced by another character for story reasons. His additions are slower than Albert's so you may want to learn all of the additions with Lavitz first.

ROSE

Rose is just above Dart in all stats, she is also the most powerful of the women characters. She could be the best character in the game if... Her Dragoon magic wasn't so weak, 2 of her 4 powers are pretty much useless and since you only really use thr dragoon form against bosses. Her max Hit Points are also very low for the type of character she is, making her a tough choice for beginners. Good for a second or third play-through, but in your first game ditch her for another character as soon as you can. Her Demon's Dance addition is one of the most powerful, if you stick with her though.

MERU

Meru is below even Shana in Attack, but she is the fastest character, and she is the second most powerful magic user and defender. Meru is so fast, that if you use the right acessory and magic item, I've seen her take up to 3 turns in a row. Her Dragoon Magic is quite useful, espcially her Rainbow Breath healing spell. She adds good balance to a strong physical party, as she can withstand quite a few powerful magic blasts, and then bring back the downed powerhouses. One of my favorite party choices.

ALBERT

Albert is just above Rose in attack and defence, but is below most characters in Magic Offence and Defence. Primarily a physical attacker, his weapon will do the most damage. And his additions are fairly quick, you may want to learn all the additions with Lavitz first, as his are slower. His Dragoon magic is actually fairly useful, espcially his Rose Storm(oddly called Petal Storm when using Lavitz), it protects your party up to 50% of magic damage for 3 turns, it'll save your butt in early in the game. A good choice for beginners.

MIRANDA

Miranda's stats are the same as Shana's, so in that way you get to see how Shana would have fully grown. The Bow and Arrows, doesn't feature a Addition move so beginners might want to add Miranda to their parties. Also that ALL of her magic has a positive benifit to the party, two healing magics, one that REVIVES and Recovers a single party member 100% and another that heals the party HP 100%. Her other magics increase charcter and Party strength(attack power) My least favorite because I love additions and she has none.

HASCHEL

Haschel is another one of the more balanced characters of the game, he is slighlty more powerful than Dart in attack, but maybe slightly below him in the Magic catagories. The only thing that lacks in Haschel's arsenal is his Dragoon form magic, like Rose it is very weak and is not really worth using. Haschel's Lightning elemetal alignment makes him even more balanced, as he does not take extra damage from elemental spells and does not do more. The power of his final addition makes up for his lack of good Dragoon Magic. One of my favorites in my party.

KONGOL

Kongol is the powerhouse of the game, he is the strongest physical attacker and has the best physical defence. But that means he is the weakest against magic attacks, and isn't very good at using spells. One good magic blast from a powerful foe will drop him, in most cases. And espcially later in the game when all the enemies do is magic attacks keeping him alive can be hard. He is also limited to only 3 addition attacks, but because of his streagth, they end up pretty powerful. Not reccomended for beginners, good for vets wanting a challenge.

CHARACTER COMPARISON
Stat ratings are based of off starting and Body stats. Subject to error and opinion, but I think you'll find that you won't notice some of the closer stats, but some of the characters the stats are very drastic in comparison. Please note: Miranda later represents Shana and Albert later represents Lavitz. Miranda and Albert are the characters you'll finish the game with so only their names are mentioned. The names are color coded. If you use this chart to create parties than just know that MDEF is the most important stat in LoD, because of how the magic system works.
