Quadra
Island is located between Vancouver Island and the British Columbia mainland
on Canada's west coast. Heavily forested, with a population of about 3000,
Quadra Island is a beautiful place to live and to visit. The residents
of the island are particularly friendly and hospitable.
There are abundant recreational opportunities: sailing, canoeing, kayaking,
fishing, hiking, biking and birdwatching are popular pasttimes with residents
and visitors alike.

and you'll find our restaurants excellent.
You'll also find a wonderful variety of shops offering art, gifts, books,
music, flowers and plants and local crafts.

Wildlife
and Scenic Beauty
There
is abundant wildlife, recreational opportunities and scenic beauty to be
found here.
Wildlife
Wildlife
on the island include blacktailed deer, racoons, douglas squirrels, river
otters. You'll find harbour seals, sea lions and pods of orcas (killer
whales) in the waters off the island.
Birdwatchers
will delight with the variety of birds including grebes, ducks, scoters,
mergansers, chickadees, sparrows, wrens, finches, hummingbirds and woodpeckers.
Peregrine falcons and snowy owls have been spotted in the northern reaches
of the island and, during spring and early summer, you'll see the beautiful
Bald Eagle circling in our skies.
Flora
Along
with the douglas fir, spruce, alder and other trees, you'll find beds of
ferns, thick mosses, salal, blackberry and salmonberry bushes, and an abundance
of wildflowers. In the spring, Scotch Broom explode all over the island
with their brilliant yellow flowers.
Every
summer, there is a garden tour on the island on which highlights some of
the outstanding gardens nurtured by residents.

are abundant recreational treats to be found on Quadra Island.
Rebecca Spit
Provincial Park
You'll
enjoy the scenic splendor of Rebecca Spit, located between Drew Harbour
and Sutil Channel. The park offers scenic locations for your picnic with
barbecue pits, an open field, hiking trails and a boat launch ramp. Take
time to inhale the fresh air while viewing the surrounding snow-capped
mountains, other local islands and beautiful waters.
Sailing and
Fishing Charters
A
number of companies offer fishing and sightseeing charters. Fish for salmon
in Sutil Channel or Georgia Strait.
Sutil Charters offers year-round salmon and cod fishing and sightseeing.
Feederspring Fishing Charters, operating the 22' Boston Whaler,
provides charter fishing for salmon and bottom fish, along with sightseeing
charters.
Canoeing and
Kayaking
You'll
see kayaks and canoes on the lakes of Quadra Island and at Heriot Bay.
Bring your own or rent a kayak or canoe.
Coastal Spirits offers guided kayak and hiking tours. Their 26' Sea Ray
boat charter with a kayak rack offers 1 to 12 day trips.
Or rent a canoe for just $35 a day from Quadra Sun Rentals.
Coast Mountain Expeditions Ltd. hosts scheduled 3 to 7 day guided kayak
expeditions with accommodations at Read Island Homestead Lodge included.
They also offer day trips and kayak instruction.
Want to learn to sail? Pursuit Sailing School offers training aboard the
beautiful Pursuit sailboat at Heriot Bay.
Hiking
There are
dozens of trails for hikers on Quadra Island ranging from the moderate
to difficult. Haskin Farm Trail takes from 1 to 1-1/2 hours and is rated
as moderate. Old Community Hall Trail takes approximately 40 minutes to
hike and is also rated moderate.
You'll certainly enjoy the trail at Rebecca Spit. It takes about 50 minutes
to hike and is moderate. Also rated as moderate is the Newton Lake trail,
which takes about 2 to 2-1/2 hours to complete.
Rated
as more difficult are the Morte Lake (1-3/4 to 3 hours) trail and Chinese
Mountain (2 hours) trail. These trails include at least one hour of uphill
walking.
The
Old Growth Trail via Nugedzi Lake (5 hours or more) is rated as difficult.
The tourist information booth located beside Quadra Credit Union on Harper
Road in Quathiaski Cove will provide maps.
Bicycling
Long,
winding roads lined with beautiful trees, wildflowers and ferns will delight
the bicylist on Quadra Island. Traffic is light and the island speed limit
is 60 kph (about 40 mph), so you'll enjoy riding about the island. If you'd
prefer to rent a bicycle, Island Cycle offers "different spokes for different
folks." They offer sales, rentals, accessories and repairs.
Diving
There
is some of the best diving in the world here as well. Several charter companies
are available.

Galleries, Museums and Studios
Quadra
is home to talented artists and an excellent museum.
Ed and Ethel Drahanchuk operate one of Canada's oldest, most successful
art galleries. Established in 1961, you'll find their professional gallery
features paintings, prints, stone sculpture and multi-award winning pottery.
Kwagiulth Museum and Cultural Center hosts a Potlatch Collection exhibit
and new Carving and Artists Centre. You'll find native artwork in their
gift shop, and enjoy their cultural programs, videos and guided tours.
You'll find award-winning porcelain dolls, classes and supplies at Emily's
Heirloom Studio.
Susan Westren offers functional and decorative pottery in stoneware, porcelain
and raku at her studio.
James Pottery has a studio and gallery for visitors.
Fools Gallery offers fine art displayed in a friendly environment.
