Cortes Island sculptor, Volker Steigemann, is creating his fourth series of hand carved and sculpted beams. Each beam spans twenty feet and is made from excellent quality, local Sitka spruce. Pricing ranges from US$1,000 to US$3,000 per beam depending on the level of carving and sculpting detail.
As a set, these beams will be a beautiful structural highlight in a large public or private space such as a community hall, restaurant, gallery, library, conference center or great room. In addition the high quality and natural properties of Sitka spruce create an excellent springy floor above for dancing or other active uses.
A value-added Canadian softwood product, all from beautiful Cortes
Island in British Columbia.

The Beams
There are seven beams currently available from this series. The spacing between beams can be 4' to 10' depending on floor structure. Using all seven beams, the total room size can be 20' wide by 32'-80' long.

BEAM 2.   7" x 9" by 20'
BEAM 3.   7" x 9" by 20'
BEAM 4.   7" x 9" by 20'
BEAM 5. 10" x 9" by 20'
BEAM 6. 10" x 9" by 20'
BEAM 7. 11" x 9" by 20'

The Designs
Volker's carving and sculpture integrates the styles and materials of the native Northwest high carving culture with his own Bavarian Oberammergau formal training, and with the natural beauty of his island home.
All motifs are based on the Northwest environment. For these beams, Volker is working up a design featuring the lives of the pacific salmon.
However, as of this writing, Volker has not sculpted these elements on the beams themselves. Until this work begins, Volker is open to working together with a customer on a different Northwest motif.
An earlier beam series has the motif of the backbone, ribs and tail of a whale. Another series celebrates the migration of the local birds.
