Okay, it's been the whole weekend and it's time bring you another NLU. For this edition the agenda includes: Saints Row (Marathon and Demo), Star Fox Command review recap and a look at what to expect this week. So let's go all in on another NLU!
Saints Row (Marathon and Demo) On Saturday, GameSpot held it's third gameplay marthon, this time 8 hours with Saints Row, a game that is inspired by GTA, but features it own distinct look and feel. Before I saw this marathon, I had hardly even paid much attention to Saints Row. Probably the last time I had even saw footage of the game was at E3 2005, during the Microsoft Press Event. As you may or may not know, I'm not a big fan of the the Playstation 2 GTA games, they just don't appeal to me at all. Yeah, they are fun for about 15 - 20 minutes of just going on a criminal rampage, but I don't like the controls and the design of the game is just too overwelming for me... To get to the point, after watching the Saints Row Marathon for about 6 of the 8 hours, I turned on my 360 and downloaded the demo version for myself.
I'm not going to run down the demo for you, but let's just say it is far more enjoyable to me than the last 3 GTA games have been. My favorite aspect is that when you are fighting the rival gangs, the police DO NOT care about it. Unless an innocent gets harmed or you hit a cop, they could just care less, unless of course it is scripted for them to show up. And if you piss off the cops or a rival gang to the point they are after you, you just drive to the confessional, pay some cash and boom, all clear, off to cause more havoc.
The other aspect I like is the full third person aiming, it is much more intuitive than GTA's auto-aim/lock-on, not too mention much more satisfiying, when you get off a great shot. I also really like the map in this game, it shows you where all your possible missions are and then you can just click on to set a waypoint and a line of green lights in your small hud map direct you to the location with ease. Saving you much time just looking around for missions or side-missions.
Also I find the cars handle much better in Saints Row, which appeals to the driving game fan in me. I also like how the game doesn't take itself too seriously, sure there is a lot of cussing, but the attitude is pretty laid back. The point of all this is, after the marathon and the demo, I'm going to be picking up Saints Row this week. It wasn't even on my radar, it was a pleasent surprise.
StarFox Command Review Recap To be honest, I didn't even really read the reviews that thouroghly this time around. I just checked the scores and read the parts of the reviews about the controls. Both sites (IGN and GS) are pretty happy with the controls and I tryed it out on my DS (not the game just the controls) and I think I will be able to control the ship with the stylus and press L to fire my lasers, without cramping up. The scores for SFC are 7.5 from GameSpot and 8.0 from IGN. I will be picking this game up this week, I checked today, but it will most likely show up tomorrow. So check back tomorrow for my first impressions.
This Week Finally, this week expect: StarFox Command Impressions, Enchanted Arms Review Recap, Dead Rising Update #2 (Yes, I will actually play it this week), Saints Row Review Recap and impressions of Encanted Arms and Saints Row if I'm lucky and they show up this week. Also there will be no NLU Weekly this week, because Thursday will be August 2006 Month-In-Review. That's it from me for today, this week will be busy, so keep an eye on your Tracked Blogs list. Oh, and feel free to Tag my blog posts. Sloppy Seconds: If the blood is still wet, it's 50% off! Loading Complete!
