 Impressions: Dead Space
 |
*DUUUUHNN!* (sound of a loud orchestral chord) did I scare you? If I didn't then playing Dead Space won't scare you either. I bought Dead Space in late October and procrastinated playing it because I thought it was going to scare me too much. But it follows they same damn boring horror film conventions that you've seen a million times. Every time you hear that loud orchestral wail/chord you are supposed to jump all it really ends up doing is letting you know a monster has appeared, which removes any of the fright from the game. Sure in a game sense of things it would be a tad annoying to not know there are monsters in the room, but the game has a good atmosphere so a sneak attack from a monster would scare the crap out of you.
In fact there was this one sequence where I was forced to go into decontamination, before I went in to the small room, I said to myself: "hmm... lock me into a small room, (sarcasm) I bet I'm not going to get attacked by monsters or anything while I am trapped inside." Well, I did, stupid predictable horror nonsense. It has taken me about an hour per chapter to get to the start of chapter 4 (2:57, I think the clock said), if this game is going to continue like this for 8 more hours it is going to lose me. But we'll see, maybe it gets more exciting, but all I have been doing is following a line as my CO orders me from place to place and when the loud chord warns me of monsters I separate them from their limbs.
I love the atmosphere, I love the setting, but the repetitive nature of the game is already starting to get to me. It has impressed me, but I'm not 100% sure on it just yet. I'm going to play some more tonight, I have only spent barely 3 hours playing, so we'll see how things end up in my finished article which I plan to have sometime in the next few days. By the way, the ripper weapon is awesome, a gun that shoots a circular saw blade to a certain distance and cuts things to pieces... *glee*
Other Stuff In other news, after watching the GameSpot's Prince of Persia marathon I am going to pick that game up this weekend. I partly loved Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, I loved the amazing platforming, but the combat was too frequent and as dumb as hell. I just wanted to jump and swing from ledge to ledge but these dumb fights kept annoying me. Even though the fights in this new game still seem dumb (they look great thanks to the amazing animations), the balance seems to be much more towards the platforming. I'll probably have my first impressions by Sunday or so.
Now for more blog related news, I am thinking of having a videogame Q&A as part of my year end special. I want to get you guys to send me videogame related questions and I will take the time to answer them in that article. JUST HOLD UP A SECOND... I don't want you to post any questions just yet I will have a special post just for that probably next Wednesday (Dec 10th) and you can learn more about it then, I just want to give you all a heads up so that you could start thinking about questions. Now keep in mind I am not talking trivia type questions, but more general questions, about favorites, about thoughts on videogame industry stuff, about game mechanics, you know that kind of stuff. But like I said just hold on to them until next week.
That covers everything I wanted to say for today, I should have more coming up in the next few days. But if I don't post too much it is because I am playing games or I am working on my year end special which takes a ton of preparation. I'll talk to you later. Loading Complete!
